Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hails the potential of summer signing Alberto Moreno.
After weeks of speculation and negotiation, Alberto Moreno joined Liverpool from Sevilla for a reported transfer fee of £12 million earlier this month.
However, the 22-year-old defender could not feature in the Reds’ clash against Southampton at Anfield on the opening weekend of the 2014-15 Premier League campaign.
The left-back was not eligible for the match that ended in a 2-1 win for the hosts, but he is available for Liverpool’s encounter against English champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium tonight.
Manager Brendan Rodgers may not throw Moreno at the deep end, but he will be on the bench. And if needed, then the Spain international could come on and play a part.
‘He has got huge potential’, Liverpool’s official website quotes Rodgers as saying. ‘We needed a left-sided player. We monitored him for a while and when we felt we got the value and the worth, we were able to clinch the deal.
‘He’s a really exciting young player. When you watch him, he’s very attack-minded, very quick and he serves the ball really well. At 22, he’s hungry to succeed.
‘He has got improvements to make but he’s one of the players we’ve brought in this summer who is ready to play straight away’.
Moreno enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2013-14 and was a key player in Sevilla’s successful Europa League campaign.
The Spaniard provided three assists in 11 starts in the European competition and scored three goals in 29 La Liga appearances, as Sevilla finished fifth in the Spanish top flight.
The left-back is an important addition to the Liverpool team whose experience in Europe will be crucial in the Merseyside outfit’s Champions League campaign.
Of course, like all foreign players, Moreno could take some time in adapting to the Premier League, but he has the quality and talent to become a success at Anfield.
