Billy Gilmour has been backed for Liverpool just days after completing a move from Chelsea to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Liverpool were forced into the transfer market on deadline day due to a number of injuries in midfield.

They ended up signing Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus, taking the Brazilian until next summer.

That’s a gamble given Arthur’s lack of success in recent times and Liverpool are bound to look at other midfielders next summer and beyond.

As Liverpool were signing Arthur, there were other midfielders on the move on deadline day.

Brighton and Hove Albion swooped to sign Gilmour from Chelsea, securing a permanent deal for the Scot worth around £9million.

Gilmour joined Chelsea from Rangers in 2017 but struggled to nail down consistent first-team football at Stamford Bridge.

A loan spell at Norwich City last season really didn’t work out for Gilmour and Chelsea have now decided to sell.

Gilmour may have been looking forward to playing under Graham Potter at Brighton, but he has now – somewhat ironically – left the Seagulls for Chelsea.

Gilmour clearly has huge talent; just look at the way he ran the show for Scotland against England at Euro 2020 last summer.

Brighton will be hoping to get that level of performance out of Gilmour on a consistent basis – and he’s already being backed for big move.

Former Scotland international and current pundit Pat Nevin has told The Herald that he thinks Gilmour’s move to Brighton is simply ‘brilliant’.

Nevin added that he thinks Gilmour could end up joining Manchester City or Liverpool, maybe even Chelsea again in the future, because he is just so technically good.

“Billy Gilmour is at a crucial point in his career, and the move to Brighton is brilliant,” said Nevin. “It’s the right move. Chelsea won’t regret selling him because that’s not the way they think as a club – but they may want to buy him back again.”

“Four or five years down the line, I won’t be surprised if he’s playing in the Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea midfield – he’s that technically good,” he added.

Liverpool do have a couple of Scottish talents in Andrew Robertson and Calvin Ramsay, so maybe it wouldn’t be the worst idea to keep tabs on Gilmour and see if he can live up to his early billing.
