Liverpool’s latest reported targets suggest they are looking to replicate Philipe Coutinho’s previous impact at the club.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has rounded off business improving the central midfield this summer, adding quality reinforcements in the shape of Monaco enforcer Fabinho and RB Leipzig maestro Naby Keita, and is now looking to bolster his attacking options.
However, Klopp was dealt a serious blow in pursuit of his key target on Friday, as news surfaced revealing Lyon forward Nabil Fekir is set to stay with the Ligue 1 giants next term, according to BBC Sport.
The news compounded a previous blow for the Reds just days earlier, as their secondary target Manuel Lanzini sustained an ACL tear in training with Argentina, which is likely to keep him sidelined until 2019, according to Sky Sports.
Klopp was said to see the Hammers’ maestro as back-up option to Fekir, according to the Telegraph, but any plans to revisit interest will now likely be scrapped.
The reported interest in both players undoubtedly suggests that Klopp is keen to replace Philipe Coutinho’s impact at the club – after he left for Barcelona in January – as both share similar qualities to the Brazilian and employ a similar game.
However, the change in system since his departure has served Liverpool incredibly well, as the more functional and industrious midfield three suits Klopp’s high-pressing philosophy to a tee.
There is a need for further width at Anfield, as both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah favour cutting back, looking for inverted runs into the box, which can prove tough against resolute defences in the Premier League. And the previously mentioned Liverpool targets would not improve that issue.
Perhaps Klopp would be best served evaluating his targets after recent events, and to prioritise bringing in reported targets such as Marco Asensio (Diario Gol) and Oumane Dembele (the Express) to genuinely improve deficiencies within the side.
