Liverpool need to revamp their midfield, and, for some reason, their idea to do that is to sign Matheus Nunes from Wolves.
Indeed, according to The Telegraph, the Reds are exploring a deal for Nunes right now.
The Reds are in need of midfield reinforcements, and Nunes is a talented player, but there are a lot of boxes that he doesn’t tick for Liverpool.
As Jamie Carragher said on Monday evening, Liverpool need to base their midfield on physicality and intensity, and that just isn’t Nunes’ game.
He’s an expert ball-carrier and he is quite an intelligent presser, but he lacks aggression and physicality in the middle of the park.
Liverpool don’t need Nunes in the same way that Wolves didn’t need Nunes in the summer. They need a midfielder who will run their socks off, tackle hard and win the ball back high up the pitch.
There is a Portuguese midfielder out there who fits that profile, and sadly, Wolves passed up on the opportunity to sign him in the summer.
His name is Joao Palhinha.
Wolves opted to sign Nunes over Palhinha in the summer, despite agreeing a deal with the Fulham star, and it’s fair to say that they may be regretting that decision.
The midfielder’s strength, aggression and steel has led Fulham into the top-half at this point of the season, and Palhinha looks like he’s ready-made for a Champions League club.
He’s averaging more tackles per game than any other Premier League player, and he’d be absolutely perfect for this Liverpool team.
However, the Reds are, just like Wolves in the summer, looking at the wrong Portuguese midfielder. Nunes doesn’t fit the bill of what Liverpool need but is a stylish option, while Palhinha is right there, proving he can do everything Liverpool need from a midfielder in the Premier League, but is slipping under the radar.
Wolves were wrong to pick Nunes over Palhinha in the summer, and now Liverpool look set to make the exact same mistake.
