Liverpool want Antonio Silva and an unnamed English club are allegedly ready to offer around €60million (£52million) for the Benfica defender.

The Reds are expected to make a number of signings in 2023 as they look to freshen up Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Much of the focus is on midfielders but could Liverpool also go for a new central defender?

Joel Matip’s injuries continue to be a problem and with Joe Gomez very inconsistent this season, Liverpool may dip into the market for another defender.

Liverpool want Antonio Silva

That may feel like a luxury but Liverpool appear to be eyeing up Benfica defender Antonio Silva.

Fabrizio Romano noted in October that Liverpool and Manchester United are thought to be in the mix for Silva.

Silva, 19, has been in the Benfica ranks since arriving from Viseu United back in 2016.

The 6ft 2in centre back has burst onto the scene this season and has already bagged three goals in 16 games for Benfica.

Jamie Carragher has backed Silva to become a ‘superstar’ and Liverpool certainly have scouts looking in the Portuguese market.

Luis Diaz arrived from Porto in January whilst Darwin Nunez joined from Benfica over the summer.

Silva could end up following and reports suggest that England may well be his destination.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola report that an unnamed English club are now planning to offer €60million (£52million) for Silva.

The links to Liverpool will leave some wondering whether another raid on the Portuguese market is imminent.

£52million seems a lot to spend on a defender though, especially when Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk look so good together.

We would suggest that Manchester United may be the more likely move at this point but you couldn’t blame Liverpool for being interested in the Portugal Under-21 star.
