Liverpool wanted to sign Andreas Schjelderup and the teenager was ‘tempted’ by making the move – but he has instead chosen a move to Benfica.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking about Schjelderup’s future today.
Romano claimed on Twitter that Nordsjaelland talent Schjelderup was ‘tempted’ to sign for Liverpool having received interest from the Reds.
The transfer insider notes that Benfica have won the race for Schjelderup though, paying €14million (£12.5million) whilst giving Nordsjaelland a 20% sell-on clause.
Romano has also stated on YouTube that Liverpool ‘held meetings’ to sign Schjelderup and spoke to his representatives.
Liverpool were trying to line up a deal for the end of the season, but Schjelderup preferred a move to Benfica, believing that step is better for his development.
That’s a bold step for Schjelderup but you can be sure that Liverpool will have one eye on his progress in Portugal.

Who is Liverpool target Andreas Schjelderup?
Schjelderup was considered to be a top prospect with Bodo/Glimt in Norway and had major interest back then.
The winger had trials at Liverpool and Tottenham during his time at Bodo/Glimt but chose to join Nordsjaelland instead, preferring to play first-team football.
Schjelderup even claims that he rejected a deal with Liverpool and it really hurt him to make that decision at the time.
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that Liverpool are back in for Schjelderup again, but it sounds like they’re also going to miss out… again.
Schjelderup has scored 10 goals in 17 games this season, playing mostly as a left-sided winger but also as a number 10.
Still only 18, Schjelderup should have a huge future ahead of him and Benfica will be looking to develop him into a star to ultimately sell for huge profit.
If Schjelderup continues to shine, Liverpool will surely make a third move for the Norwegian ace.
