Scott Brown earned himself a place in Celtic folklore on Wednesday night as the Hoops captain made his 500th appearance in all competitions for the Scottish champions – and Liverpool and West Ham stars have congratulated him.

Brown, 33, saw out the entire 90 minutes as Celtic eased past Motherwell at Parkhead thanks to goals from Anthony Ralston, a Scott Sinclair penalty and an excellent effort from Mikey Johnston.

The win saw Brown’s Celtic leapfrog Old Firm rivals Rangers to sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with Steven Gerrard’s men only managing a 0-0 draw against Hibernian at Easter Road.

Brown posted on Instagram after the win, thanks fans for the support as he turned out for the 500th time for Celtic – he is 29 away from entering the top 10 appearance-makers for Celtic, with Jimmy Johnstone on 529.

Since joining Celtic from Hibs in 2007, Brown has helped Celtic win eight Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and five Scottish League Cups. He has scored 37 goals, and created 58 more.

Liverpool left-back and Scotland captain Andy Robertson as well as West Ham United winger Robert Snodgrass congratulated Brown on Instagram, replying to his post.
