Two Premier League players have shone whilst on international duty for Uruguay overnight ahead of Copa America.

With a busy summer of international football ahead, a large swathe of Premier League players will be featuring for their countries.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Darwin Nunez both shone for Uruguay overnight following a 4-0 win against Mexico, with the Liverpool forward netting a hattrick.

The future for Nunez at Liverpool is uncertain with new manager Arne Slot set to take the reins at Anfield as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Bentancur and Nunez shine

According to El Pais, both Bentancur, who has had his injury problems this season under Ange Postecoglou, as well as Nunez, who has been criticised for his struggles in front of goal, excelled.

On Bentancur, who was awarded an 8 rating, the Uruguayan newspaper wrote: “A masterful pass for the first goal. You can tell he’s worked hard but Bentancur has the ability to put those types of passes between the lines. He was also involved in the second goal.

“A touch of distinction in every play, he knows what to do before receiving the ball and thus accompanies the quick transitions proposed by Bielsa.”

As for Nunez, who was awarded a 9 rating, El Pais wrote: “He scored three goals and it suits him very well. Also, like the whole team, he had a lot of mobility.

“He generated an attack on the wing in which he overflowed and threw the cross in a play that was a corner for La Celeste but was not warned. Another good run in the second half was blocked by the goalkeeper.”

Nunez’s future

For Nunez, it is unclear what the future holds for the Uruguayan forward but he has struggled to reach the heights that the fee that Liverpool paid to Benfica suggested he should have.

A report from The Athletic has detailed that Slot is keen on trying to get the best out of the Uruguayan next season.

Slot does have history of this with Mexican forward Santiago Gimenez excelling under his tutelage at Feyenoord, with 23 goals and six assists to his name in the Eredivisie, so Nunez could be in safe hands.
