The right-back has been called up in the absence of Nathaniel Clyne.
England’s Glen Johnson (R) is brought down in the area by Poland’s Pawel Wszolek but a penalty is not awarded
Gareth Southgate has named his first England squad since taking over on an interim basis from Sam Allardyce, and there was certainly one surprise name in there.
With Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne out injured Southgate, instead of going for a fresh face, has reverted to an old favourite – with Stoke City full-back Glen Johnson getting a call-up.
It is the first call-up for Johnson since 2014 and the 32-year-old will be looking to add to his 54 caps for England.
There is no doubt that Liverpool fans, where Johnson was playing when he last played for England, found the news that he had taken the place of Clyne highly amusing – as was evident on Twitter:
But whilst Liverpool fans could not believe it, Stoke City fans were quite the opposite.
The Potters faithful were in no doubt that the call-up was fully deserved for the veteran full-back – who has been in consistently good form for Stoke when fit.
They were far more appreciative of the decision by Southgate to give him the call up:
Hopefully he can prove his doubters wrong and his supporters right in the coming week.
