Liverpool, Wolves and Everton have missed out on Hwang Hee-Chan with RB Leipzig unveiling the signing of a prolific forward who ‘fits our profile perfectly’, as reported via the Bundesliga’s official website.
With his brilliant movement, lethal finishing and ability to play anywhere across the frontline, it was no surprise to learn that a forward nicknamed the new Sergio Aguero had admirers aplenty in the Premier League.
Everton, who were linked via the Liverpool Echo in May, certainly could have done with Hwang’s speed and purpose during that most insipid of defeats away to Tottenham on Monday night.
Sky, meanwhile, report that the South Korea international was also a target for Wolves and a Liverpool side who snapped up his former Red Bull Salzburg team-mate Takumi Minamino in January.
But given the close ties between taurine-powered sister clubs Leipzig and Salzburg, a move across the German border always felt like the most likely conclusion to a lengthy transfer saga.
“In Hee-chan Hwang we have signed a player who fits the profile of what we are looking for,” Leipzig’s sporting director Markus Krosche says with a bargain £9 million deal completed.
“He can play in any attacking position, on the wings or as a main man in the middle. He makes our attack more flexible with his speed and mobility.
“He had a great season in Austria, as both a goalscorer and provider, and he particularly impressed in the Champions League.”
He did indeed. Just ask Liverpool.
Even Europe’s most watertight backline just couldn’t deal with Hwang’s Firmino-esque movement and link-play during that seven-goal thriller at Anfield in the autumn, a game in which the Asian sensation added to his remarkable tally of 16 goals and 22 assists.
“Absolutely crazy – he was brilliant today,” a certain Erling Haaland said at full-time.
But if Hwang plays at Anfield again next season, it will be in Leipzig colours.
