Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United and Manchester City have all been linked with a move for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk.
Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk
The likes of Liverpool and Everton have suffered a small blow regarding their summer transfer plans after Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger told talkSPORT that Virgil van Dijk is not going anywhere at the end of the season.
According to the Daily Mirror, the Merseyside pair, as well Manchester City and Manchester United, have been keeping an eye on the 25-year-old following his excellent season with the Saints ahead of a potential summer swoop.
However, Krueger has issued a hands off warning by insisting that the former Celtic man is more than happy where he is right now and has no plans to move on.
“Virgil is committed to us for a long time and we don’t see anything but that in our future,” he told Jim White on talkSPORT.
“We will be sitting together in a few weeks to look at our summer transfer window and what the plans are.
“At the moment, Virgil is very committed to us. He is our team captain and we see him in our red and white stripes.”
While the news may not hurt Everton too much – the Mirror reports that they are confident of a deal for Burnley’s Michael Keane – Liverpool would be forgiven for taking a serious look at the Dutchman due to their problems at the back.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
No team in the top eight of the Premier League has conceded more goals than Jurgen Klopp’s side this term, and their frailties were highlighted, once again, by Leicester City on Monday as the struggling Foxes put three past the Reds on their way to victory.
With Southampton conceding just 31 goals in the top flight this season, it would hardly have been a surprise if the Anfield club had been considering van Dijk as an excellent option to pursue ahead of next season, and it seems that they may now need to break the bank if they hope to land him.
