Since Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both went down with long-term knee injuries, Liverpool have been linked with signing a whole host of centre backs.

Jurgen Klopp has managed to battle through so far, but few would blame him for dipping into the transfer market for a new defender come January.

A whole host of centre backs have been linked, including Dayot Upamecano, Ozan Kabak and Perr Schuurs, but another name has now been suggested.

The Daily Mail claim that Liverpool fancy Borussia Dortmund centre back Manuel Akanji, viewing him as a potential alternative target to Upamecano.

Liverpool allegedly pursued Akanji in the past; The Independent reported in December 2017 that Michael Edwards was pursuing him before signing Virgil van Dijk instead.

It would therefore make some sense if Liverpool now wanted the Swiss ace again, especially given how adept he is at progressing the ball out from the back.

Liverpool fans have been taking to Twitter to react to the rumours, and seem unconvinced with a number of supporters claiming that Akanji isn’t good enough for a move to Anfield.

Dortmund fans got involved too, begging that Liverpool don’t sign Akanji having seen him impress this season, even claiming they would be ‘devastated’ to see him go.
