Chris Sutton isn’t backing Liverpool to beat Ajax as he feels that the Reds are going through more than a blip right now.

The Reds started their Champions League campaign with a 4-1 defeat last week as they completely fell apart against Napoli.

Liverpool just haven’t looked their usual selves this season, turning in disappointing displays against the likes of Fulham, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have now had almost a week off since that Napoli defeat and have to come up with a response against Ajax tonight.

Chris Sutton isn’t backing Liverpool to beat Ajax

Whilst Liverpool opened with a 4-1 defeat, Ajax started their group stage campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of Rangers.

The Dutch giants are in fine form and will be looking to add to Liverpool’s troubles with a victory tonight.

Klopp needs to have come up with some answers after that horror show in Naples but some still aren’t convinced that Liverpool will hit back tonight.

Pundit Chris Sutton has told the Daily Mail that he has been trying to convince himself that Liverpool’s shaky form of late is just a blip.

However, Sutton believes that 4-1 thrashing at Napoli means this is much, much more than a blip.

Sutton claims that something is ‘amiss’ at Liverpool because even big names like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are really struggling for form too.

Sutton believes Ajax will come to Anfield and have a real go having beaten Rangers 4-0 last week and he thinks the Dutch side will claim a 2-2 draw.

“I kept thinking because of what Liverpool have achieved in previous seasons that it was only a blip they were in,” said Sutton. “But with the way Napoli won 4-1 and made Liverpool’s defence look like tourists on an Italian holiday, it has become more than that. Something’s amiss there. From Virgil van Dijk at the back to Mohamed Salah up front, they’ve not been clicking.”

“Liverpool’s players lapped up the praise when they were on song. Now we need to see how they respond when they’re hitting bum notes. Ajax will have a go. They’re fearless and beat Rangers 4-0 last week. There’s no time to waste for Liverpool to get their season back on track, but I fear Ajax will take something away from Anfield,” he added.

Liverpool can at least welcome Thiago Alcantara back to the starting lineup having brought him off the bench in Naples.

Joel Matip is likely to start in defence in place of Joe Gomez whilst Darwin Nunez may get the nod up front as Liverpool push for a win tonight.
