The centre-back is one of Liverpool’s most important players.
Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk sat down for an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, and suggested that he wants to remain playing at the top level with the Reds until he is at least 36-years-old.
The towering Dutchman signed for Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018, for a fee believed to be worth somewhere in the region of £75 million, and he is now widely considered to be one of the finest central defenders in world football.
Van Dijk’s arrival at Anfield has coincided with the Reds recent rise to prominence, and with the 27-year-old now part of the team, Jürgen Klopp’s side are regarded as genuine challengers for major honours both domestically and on the continent.
The former Celtic and Southampton man sat down for an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, and admitted that his aim at Liverpool is to one day be considered a legend at the football club:
“Maybe as a legend at Liverpool. Obviously that’s something at the moment that’s come to my mind. I want to achieve great things. I’m 27, hopefully I can play if I’m still enjoying it until at least 36. After that, you can’t really play at the highest level anymore, so you have to enjoy it.”
Van Dijk missed Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, but he will return from suspension for the second leg, and Klopp will be delighted to have the 6ft 4in back and available for selection.
If the Reds are to have any chance of winning silverware this season, the Holland international will have to remain fit and be on his very best form between now and May.
