The Liverpool defender only has 12 months remaining on his current deal at Anfield.
When speaking to reporters, Liverpool ace Joel Matip admitted that he is open to the idea of returning to Germany one day, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
The Cameroonian joined the Reds on a free transfer from Schalke in the summer of 2016, and he has gone on to make 98 appearances in all competitions.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Matip’s contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2020, however, so the Merseyside outfit will have to tie him down to a new deal, or risk losing him for nothing next year.
The 27-year-old, who currently earns £100,000 per week according to Spotrac, was one of Jurgen Klopp’s most consistent players last season, so the German will surely be keen to keep hold of the centre-back.
Matip admitted that he would like to return to Schalke one day, however, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo:
“In football, nothing is impossible. After initial difficulties and injuries, I feel comfortable in Liverpool now. There is still a lot of room for Schalke in my heart. That never stops. Accordingly, my worries about this club were very big. I try to watch every single game on TV.”
If Matip continues to play regularly at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, there will surely be no reason for him to seek a new playing challenge.
The Merseyside outfit must tie him down to a new contract, however, to protect his value at the very least.
