Liverpool ace Adam Lallana spoke to reporters after his side’s 3-1 pre-season win over Lyon yesterday, and suggested that he could be playing a deeper role for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

The 31-year-old has suffered badly with injuries over the past couple of seasons, but he might just have a key role to play for the Reds this term.

Lallana moved to Anfield from Southampton in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be worth £25 million, according to BBC Sport, and he has gone on to rack up 21 goals and 20 assists in 156 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.

The 34-capped England international has predominantly played as a winger or attacking midfielder, but that could all be set to change this season.

Lallana, who earns £110,000 per week according to Spotrac, spoke to reporters, and highlighted how he has been enjoying playing in a deeper role during his side’s pre-season campaign, as quoted by the club’s official website:

Adam Lallana of Liverpool is seen in the stands during the International Friendly match between Croatia and Brazil at Anfield on June 3, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

“It’s nice. I found myself playing there a few times this pre-season and I’m happy to play anywhere. I’ve enjoyed it, obviously getting on the ball. There are still aspects of the game I need to improve on and I’m sure I’ll learn the more I play there. I’m delighted to get some more minutes and build my fitness. [The manager] has mentioned I can play there, that I’ve got the ability to play there.”

Liverpool will be desperate to win their first league title since 1990 this season. And having a fit and fully firing Lallana will greatly enhance their chances of doing just that.

The silky midfielder will be hoping for a full season without injuries, and judging by his comments, we could be seeing him in a totally different role this term.

Whether he will be utilised at the base of midfield for the big games by Klopp, however, remains to be seen.
