Liverpool suffered a heavy pre-season defeat in Edinburgh against the Italians.
Liverpool’s difficult pre-season continued on Sunday with a 3-0 defeat to Italian side Napoli at Murrayfield.
After losses to Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla, as well as a draw against Sporting, Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t had the best preparations for the new English Premier League season.
While of course the results are all meaningless and the performances mostly about building fitness, the team don’t look like a unit ready for intense matches on the immediate horizon.
The European champions have a lot of work to do to get back to the standards they set last term.
One player particularly criticised against the Serie A outfit on Sunday was Joel Matip, whose defending left a lot to be desired. Napoli were able to expose both him and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the Reds’ right flank and create the opportunities that killed off the match.
Matip’s performance has left some fans questioning whether he is the right partner for Virgil van DIjk moving forward or whether Klopp should turn to Joe Gomez.
The Cameroon international was wonderful in the closing stages of last term, but should Gomez be the future of the central defence at Anfield?
The 22-year-old’s 2018/19 season was halted by a broken leg, but now fit and available again arguably deserves a chance to regain a regular starting spot.
Right now, some fans are desperate to see him get an opportunity, telling Klopp to drop Matip in the process.
