Graeme Souness believes Liverpool may ‘live to regret’ not buying a striker this summer because Divock Origi is proving to be a ‘fair drop in quality’, as he told Sky Sports Football (05/07/20 at 5:25 pm).
Jurgen Klopp opted to start Origi, who is a popular figure with the fans because of the important goals he has scored, during Liverpool’s win against Aston Villa on Sunday, as Souness was left unimpressed with his first-half display.
The Belgian was substituted off during the second-half as he failed to lay a glove on a side battling relegation.
The summer transfer window is yet to open and it will be interesting to see who Klopp decides to buy following their most successful Premier League campaign to date. Souness was quite clear that they need another striker.
“If you are world champions and the [current] Champions League [holders], you have that as well, and you are now the Premier League [winners],” Souness told Sky Sports at half-time.
“I am disappointed they are not buying another striker. I think when you don’t play one of those three [Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah] and to Origi, I think it’s a fair drop in quality.
“I think they might live to regret that. I hope I am wrong. I hope they end up buying someone to fill that gap when one of those don’t play. Firmino links everything from back to front.”
Liverpool could go out and buy any top-quality player they wish, it’s just a case of whether they are willing to splash the cash.
The problem the Premier League champions face is that not many players across the world will get ahead of their current front three.
So, if they were to go out and buy another attacker, especially a striker, he would most likely play a back-up role, so it has to be questioned whether it’s worth paying big bucks for that.
