Speaking on The Redmen TV, Neil Jones has been discussing Liverpool and recent links to Ruben Neves that have emerged.
Jones isn’t completely sold on the idea that Liverpool are targeting Neves right now, stating that he doesn’t fit their style of play as a midfield distributor, stating that Liverpool are more likely to use their defenders in that type of role.
Interestingly, Jones stated that Matheus Nunes is a more live target than Neves at the moment, this comes after The Telegraph reported that the Merseyside club were eyeing a summer swoop for the 24-year-old.
Nunes more likely than Neves
The journalist shared what he knows about this situation.
“I think he’s a good player, he’s a really good footballer. You’re right though, I’m not sure about the fit, he’s a deep-lying player and a range passer, but Liverpool use Trent and the centre-backs for that range of play,” Jones said.
“His agent is Jorge Mendes, but I think Matheus Nunes is a more live target in that sense. Neves feels like someone like James Ward-Prowse or Wilfried Zaha where he has been at his club for a bit too long. It feels like this summer is the summer where he has got to move and he’s done enough time at Molineux.”
More-suited
While it’s up for debate whether or not Nunes is the better player than Neves, there’s no doubting that he’s more suited to this Liverpool team.
Nunes is much more mobile than Neves, he’s a brilliant ball-carrier, and he covers a lot of ground.
Meanwhile, Neves is much more technical. He is at his best when he has time on the ball to pick out a pass, and that’s really not the Reds’ style.
Liverpool are making the right call in targeting Nunes over Neves.
