LIV Golf’s performances at the major championships this season have been lackluster.
Their biggest name, Bryson DeChambeau, has missed the cut at all three majors, and Jon Rahm hasn’t been far behind him. The Spaniard didn’t make the weekend at The Masters and the US Open despite competing for the win at the PGA Championship.
There have been a few solid performances, like Tyrrell Hatton at Augusta and Joaquin Niemann at Shinnecock Hills, but at no point has it even looked possible for a LIV player to win a major championship in 2026.
But because of what’s happening on the PGA Tour this week, LIV has a golden chance at The Open Championship.

Why The Open is LIV’s best chance to win a major
LIV players’ shortcomings at majors this year can be in large part attributed to their lack of battle testing throughout the season. LIV Golf plays at resort courses with weak fields, so the players are totally unprepared to compete with 100 of the world’s best golfers when they get to majors.
But this week on the PGA Tour, LIV golfers are allowed to sharpen their swords. They’ll be playing against the very best the PGA Tour has to offer at the Genesis Scottish Open.
How do you think Jon Rahm will get on at the Scottish Open?
This is a co-sanctioned event between the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, so LIV players with a DP World Tour membership, like Rahm and Hatton, will be teeing off against the likes of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler at The Renaissance Club.
This gives them a crucial week of preparation ahead of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. LIV players are set to be better prepared for this major than they have been for any of the other three, giving them a golden chance to finally win one of golf’s biggest prizes in 2026.
The player who is being overlooked ahead of The Open
The usual suspects are being thrown in the mix of likely contenders to win the Claret Jug this year, but one man is being criminally overlooked. Tyrrell Hatton has as good of a chance as anyone at Royal Birkdale.
Hatton has been the best LIV performer at the majors this year. He did miss the cut at Aronimink, but top 10s at the US Open and The Masters more than make up for that blip.
That, combined with his prowess on links golf courses, makes him a real threat to win at Birkdale. Hatton is a three-time winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, is a perennial contender at Yas Links on the DP World Tour, and he was in the mix at The Open last year.
His form and course fit mean Hatton cannot be overlooked at next week’s Open, especially if he performs well at the Scottish Open.
