There was a very early reunion for Moussa Sissoko at Tottenham Hotspur.
Two days after leaving Spurs to join Watford, the France international was back in North London to face his old club with his new one.
The Hornets visited Tottenham’s £1 billion stadium on Sunday afternoon and a goal from Son Heung-min gave the visitors a narrow lead.
But shortly after that there was a bizarre incident between Sissoko and his former boss, Nuno Espirito Santo.
Before half time, the former Newcastle United winger, who hadn’t been making matchday squads under the Portuguese coach prior to his exit, hammered the ball straight into Nuno’s sternum from a couple of feet away, after it had gone out of play.
Sissoko instantly apologised and Nuno appeared to accept it.
Here’s how some Tottenham fans reacted to the incident on Twitter yesterday:
Sissoko spent five years on the Lilywhites’ books and despite a poor first season following a £30 million move, turned things around spectacularly and was a firm fan favourite for a couple of seasons under Mauricio Pochettino.
But Pochettino’s exit in 2019 resulted in Sissoko’s influence waning in a major way, with Jose Mourinho using him sparingly for 18 months or so and Nuno evidently decided that he had no use for the 32-year-old Frenchman whatsoever.
Hitting him on Sunday was clearly accidental but, considering it had gone out of play, it remains to be seen why and where he intended the ball to go, other than right at the manager.
