Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez barely gave Chancel Mbemba a chance and the arrival of Lisandro Lopez from Benfica would be another problem.

After weeks of twiddling their thumbs and waiting for a fresh face to arrive through the doors of St James’ Park, it appears that Newcastle United fans will finally get their wish.

Portuguese publication O Jogo claims that Benfica are willing to sell centre-back Lisandro Lopez to Newcastle United in a double deal with Greek international midfielder Andreas Samaris.

The 27-year-old defender, who has represented Argentina on four occasions, is reported to cost £10.3 million and could be exactly the experienced, commanding centre-half that Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has made a priority this summer.

However, while Magpies supporters will no doubt be thrilled about the addition of a defender who has won three consecutive league titles, it will also raise concerns about what the future holds for a bonafide fans’ favourite.

Benitez made it abundantly clear last season that he does not rate Congolese centre-back Chancel Mbemba anywhere near as highly as most of the St James’ Park matchgoers.

The former Anderlecht defender played only 12 times in the Championship last season with reports in The Chronicle suggesting his lack of fluent English, and a perceived inability to carry out instructions, had proven a sticking point with his manager.

And although Mbemba featured more regularly in the latter stages of the campaign, starting five games between April and May, Lisandro’s addition would surely bump him down to fourth choice.

Though Grant Hanley is likely to be the defender let go by Newcastle, the fans’ desire to see more of Mbemba may go unanswered.
