It’s been almost eight months since Ruben Amorim took charge of Manchester United, but his influence at Sporting continues to shine, with a United-linked player openly praising the manager’s lasting impact.

The Red Devils’ coach was crucial in restoring the Lions’ prestige. He developed several players from the youth team and helped create a scenario in which the club have won three of the last five national league titles.

Now, a Sporting star has spoken about how a piece of advice from Amorim changed his approach to the game – and it’s no surprise he’s once again been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

It’s not the first time a Sporting player has spoken about Ruben Amorim’s impact.

Geny Catamo cried when the manager announced his departure, and forward Viktor Gyokeres has long been full of admiration.

Now, Pedro Gonçalves has added his voice to the growing list.

The Portugal international was once seen as a potential Bruno Fernandes replacement, with links to United dating back to early questions over Fernandes’ future.

Speaking to Alta Definicao (via Noticias Ao Minuto), Gonçalves spoke about his relationship with Amorim and the advice that stuck with him.

He said: “I like people telling me that I’m wrong, and how I should improve. I used to tell Mr. Ruben Amorim to help me if I got lost in arguments, for example. I used to joke around with him, and that’s why we get on so well. We’re very similar. I love him as a person. I remember a piece of advice he gave me from the beginning: don’t let time pass you by. Make the most of every moment.”

Sporting legacy offers hope for Amorim at United

While comparisons between the Premier League and the Portuguese league need to be made carefully, there’s no question that the traits Amorim is praised for are ones that can carry over to other clubs – regardless of competition.

He’s known for man-management, his communication with players, and creating a clear structure. Those are qualities that don’t rely on tactics or league style – they’re about people.

And the early signs at United have been encouraging in that respect. He has already won over parts of the dressing room, and there’s confidence that he won’t tolerate anyone who is not fully committed.

After several false starts, many around Old Trafford feel that, this time, they may finally have the right personality to turn things around, if he’s given the backing to see it through.
