Sunderland are currently on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Chris Coleman and announcing Ellis Short has agreed to sell the club to a group led by Stewart Donald.
The Black Cats will be playing next season in League One after suffering a successive relegation having only dropped down from the Premier League in May 2017.
Several names have already been linked with the vacant position, with the Express reporting former Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy is the current favourite to make a return to Wearside.
Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder is also in the frame, along with Leicester City assistant Michael Appleton, Jaap Stam and Paul Cook of Portsmouth. Club legend Kevin Phillips, currently Gary Rowett’s number two at Derby County, has also been mooted.

Well someone who is desperate to get into management and has spoken publicly about it is Sol Campbell, with the Telegraph reporting that Ipswich are set to hold talks with the former England international about being McCarthy’s successor at Portman Road.
Campbell was also interviewed by Oxford United before Karl Robinson was given the role and with the 43-year-old so vocal about wanting to get a job in a dugout, surely the ex-Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur star will be seriously considering putting himself forward for the position at the Stadium of Light?
