Rangers could be closing in on Steven Gerrard as their new manager.

Steven Gerrard of BT Sport looks on during the Emirates FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 27, 2017 in London, England.

Rangers appear poised to land Steven Gerrard as their new manager – and Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur has told Five Year Plan that he is very happy with the move.

The Gers relieved interim boss Graeme Murty of his duties on Tuesday, 48 hours after a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic, which secured a seventh straight title for the Bhoys.

Rangers remain miles away from Celtic, and the club must now find an appointment for a permanent manager, having sacked Pedro Caixinha back in October.

The Daily Mail report that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is closing in on the job, despite the fact that the 37-year-old has no managerial experience and would be walking into an immensely difficult job.

Gerrard’s potential move to Ibrox has caused much fanfare and reaction from pundits, and now one reported Rangers transfer target has offered his view on the situation.

Recent reports from the Daily Mail suggested that Rangers were looking to snap up Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur at the end of the season, given that the 30-year-old is a boyhood Rangers fan.

It remains to be seen whether Rangers pull off such a deal, but McArthur has now exclusively told the Five Year Plan podcast that he is very happy with what seems to be ‘perfect fit’, and suggested that everybody would want to play for Gerrard, potentially hinting at his interest in a move.

“Very happy,” said McArthur. “I think it’s a good move. Obviously it’s probably a risk on both sides because it’s a hard job right now and it’s employing someone with not much experience. But I think it’s a perfect fit.”

“I think him as a person and obviously as a top player he’s got so many experiences. And who’s a player that doesn’t want to play for Steven Gerrard, the interest that he could attract players wise,” he added.
