Athletic Bilbao have announced the departure of Iago Herrerin. And how long until the Premier League comes calling for a grizzled veteran of Spanish football?

He may be 33 these days but don’t make the mistake of assuming Herrerin will struggle to find employment, even in the autumn of his career.

In summer 2020, Basque-based publication Deia reported West Ham United and Crystal Palace were both interested. So too were Everton, via Marca.

And while August feels a long time ago, one thing remains unchanged – the Premier League trio are all still looking for a shot-stopper.

Vicente Guaita may have signed a new contract with Crystal Palace but Wayne Hennessey hasn’t.

At West Ham, there’s an acceptance 36-year-old Lukasz Fabianski can’t go on forever.

Everton, meanwhile, may decide against paying the £4 million fee Roma want for Robin Olsen in favour of bringing in another experienced shot-stopper such as Herrerin for free.

Athletic have confirmed on their official website the Bilbao-born 33-year-old will leave his San Mames home on 1 July, bringing an end to a decade of loyal service.

If Herrerin wants to try something new as the leaves creek underfoot, he could find a fresh start at Goodison, Selhurst or London’s East End.
