Celtic were this week drawn up against Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League, and very nearly could have had a player from the Russian side in their corner.

The Daily Record reported earlier this year that Celtic were considering offering Luka Djordevic a trial at the club in order to try and prove his worth.

The supposed ‘trial’ did not go ahead, and Djordevic still remains at Zenit, but he won’t be available for the cup tie.

Instead he was loaned out to fellow Russian side Arsenal Tula, where he has scored seven goals in 20 games, re-discovering the touch which has seen him called up for Montenegro at international level.

Celtic as a result can’t be haunted by the fact they did not push ahead to sign the striker.

As it transpires, Djordevic could actually turn out to be a real miss for Zenit.

Aleksandr Kokorin is their top scorer with 10 league goals, but beyond that, their nearest player is only on four, meaning Djordevic would actually be their second highest scorer.

Big name summer signing Sebastian Driussi has disappointed since his move from River Plate, scoring only three times in the league, with Artem Dzuyba has only one goal in 13 league matches.
