McKenna remained at Aberdeen in the summer despite plenty of interest in his services from Celtic and Villa.
Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna has told his club’s official website that if the “right offer” comes in he will consider the chance of leaving Pittodrie, after Aston Villa and Celtic reportedly made bids in the summer.
The Daily Record claim Celtic had a £3.5million offer rejected out of hand by Derek McInnes’ side, before Championship outfit Aston Villa launched a deadline-day move worth £6.5million – again rejected.
Aberdeen are said to be looking for a figure closer to the £10million mark (Record) if McKenna is to leave, as the Scotland international continues to shine for the Dons despite his tender age.
In an honest interview with his own club, McKenna spoke of the offers in the summer and stated that if the right offer comes in and is accepted, he will consider leaving his boyhood club.
“There had been offers earlier in the window but I thought they had passed by,” McKenna said. “I was injured at the time and I was not expecting anything to happen. Then on deadline day I had some missed calls from my agent.
“I phoned him back and he said there had been an offer from another club, Aston Villa. The club decided to knock it back and it is fine. It was the last day of the window so it would have been difficult to get someone else in.
“Offers coming in like that are very flattering. If I keep playing well, there will be more to come in the years ahead. If there is an offer that is right I will get a chance to move on but now I am fully focused and enjoying playing for Aberdeen and wanting to be part of a successful team, winning trophies.”
The powerful centre-back has played 45 times for Aberdeen in his short career, but it is more the quality in which he has shown during those outings that has attracted the likes of Villa and Celtic.
Confidence in the ball, no mercy when it comes to tackling and heading, and even the odd goal in the other penalty area – he has scored three for Aberdeen – and McKenna is becoming one of the country’s best young defenders.
No surprises then, that Celtic and Villa were keen in the summer and interest in January is likely to be high once again. One saving grace for the Dons, though, is that McKenna has a contract at Pittodrie until the summer of 2023.
