James McClean was linked with Derby in January so if West Brom go down could the move reignite?

The future of James McClean as a West Bromwich Albion player has been cast into doubt with his latest comments about leaving the club if they’re relegated.

The Baggies are currently bottom of the Premier League and five points from safety with only two matches left to play and McClean thinks those that want to exit the Hawthorns this summer should not be criticised.

“Everyone wants to play Premier League football so I do think there will obviously be a lot of people looking at their next move or their future come the summer if the inevitable happens and we do go down,” the 29-year-old was quoted by Birmingham Live.

“The fans just see it as if you do go down and players leave then you’re a snake, or you’ve taken the club for a ride and this and that.

“But we’ve got families as well, we need to look after them. We’ve also got a career to look after as well, we want to be the best we can be.

“You have to look after yourself first and foremost.”

McClean has since tried to defend his comments on social media following a backlash from West Brom fans, but the feeling remains that the Republic of Ireland international will seek a transfer if the club goes down to the Championship.

Where next?

It seems that the winger is aiming his sights on staying in the top flight of English football, although options may be limited for someone who has only managed 12 league starts this season.

One move that might suit all parties concerned is to Derby County, with Birmingham Live reporting that the Rams were close to signing McClean during the January transfer window.

Derby are currently sixth in the table and will secure a playoff spot with a point against Barnsley in their final game this weekend, so if they do achieve promotion perhaps the Irishman will be looking to finally complete that move to Pride Park.
