Linked-away Rangers ace Greg Docherty shares his plans for next season

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is targeting making the grade at Ibrox when he returns in the summer.

Greg Docherty has insisted that he plans to make the grade at Rangers next season, in comments reported by the Daily Record, shortly after reports emerged suggesting that he is attracting attention from one of the Gers’ Scottish Premiership rivals.

Docherty is arguably the Rangers loanee leaving Steven Gerrard with the most to think about after a very impressive season with Shrewsbury. It felt like a surprise that he was given the green light to leave Ibrox last summer, but he has done extremely well.

The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals for the League One side and appears to have a genuine chance of breaking into Gerrard’s plans upon his return despite the Rangers boss having a great selection of midfield options available to him.

But ahead of his return in the coming weeks, Docherty admitted that he is not expecting to immediately force his way back into the starting lineup. However, he did insist that he is looking to go nowhere.

“I know I’m not going back to Ibrox to walk straight into the team. I’ll have to fight for my place,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “But having so many games behind me shows I can withstand the rigours of a hard season. If I have to wait and bide my time, I will.

“My No.1 aim is still to go back to Rangers and be a success. I signed for them for a reason – because I want to play for Rangers. This summer I’ll try to control all I can, give my all and show I want to be there for a long time. I’m going back to give it a right go.”

The comments are particularly interesting as The Scottish Sun have reported this week that Hibernian are one of the sides keen on signing Docherty this summer if he does not feature in Gerrard’s plans.

It, of course, still remains to be seen what Gerrard wants to do with the former Hamilton ace ahead of next season. But his comments certainly hint that if it is down to Docherty, he will be going nowhere once he returns to Ibrox.
