Linfield boss David Healy has told the Evening Times that Rangers forward Kenny Miller is a credit to the Ibrox club, and explained that he had told his players that they should be inspired by him after their recent friendly.

The Scottish Premiership side travelled to Northern Ireland during the international break to face the team currently managed by their former striker in a testimonial for Linfield stalwart Jamie Mulgrew.

But with the Old Firm game just around the corner, Warburton’s men showed no signs of wanting to take the game lightly as they ran out 7-0 winners, with the 36-year-old bagging four of the goals.

And Healy was full of admiration for Miller’s performance, and admitted that he hoped that his professionalism rubbed off on some of his players.

“I said to the players at half-time and at full-time that if they take one thing out of this it should be the way that Kenny Miller goes about the game,” he told the Evening Times.

“Whether it’s a friendly, a testimonial or a cup final, he goes about it the same way. He played as if it might have been his last game.

“He’s got all the medals, all the caps for Scotland and all the goals, he’s 36 but he epitomised everything good about a footballer today.

“He turned up and he wanted to put on a show, and the people of Belfast might not have seen him close up, but they know all about him now. He was a credit to himself and his club.”

General view of Ibrox - Rangers

After their Scottish Cup final preparations came back to haunt them last season – the Gers had not played a competitive game for several weeks before they met Hibernian, who had been playing in the play-offs shortly before their Hampden Park showdown – it is hardly surprising that Warburton wanted his side to take Healy’s men very seriously.

Keeping their intensity at a high level will surely boost their chances of coming away with a positive result against their bitter rivals, and Healy has no doubt that one player in particular will be ready for the game.
