Bale is bidding to win the Champions League for a fourth time tomorrow night, when Real Madrid take on Liverpool.
A return to form has put the 28-year-old back in contention for a starting spot, with Bale scoring four goals in his last three games, and 18 in all competitions.
Former Spurs star Lineker believes that Bale’s injury hit last two seasons mean he is no longer the best British footballer, with Harry Kane’s consistency so impressive.
Lineker said: “You’d put Harry Kane marginally ahead of him over the last couple of seasons.
“You’ve got to play a lot of football to justify that tag.”
Kane ended the season battling an injury himself but ended it with terrific figures.
While he did not win the Golden Boot this season, his 30 Premier League goals was actually his highest tally yet.
In all competitions at club level Kane scored 41 goals this past season.
Unfortunately for Tottenham, Kane’s rise as a first team player did not cross over with Bale’s superb run at the club, and fans did not manage to get to see them play together.
It remains a pipe dream for many fans to get to see them play for Spurs one day, and perhaps if Bale wins another Champions League this weekend he might decide the time is right to head back to North London.
