Gary Lineker has suggested that England should try out Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.
Alexander-Arnold was left on the bench last night, with Reece James starting in the right wing-back berth for his country.
James impressed, but England struggled as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Denmark.
A key reason why England found it so difficult was a lack of progressive passing in midfield, and Lineker believes that Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold could really help in that regard.
There have also been suggestions that Alexander-Arnold will eventually end up becoming a midfielder at Liverpool.
However, he only has very limited experience in the role, and it would be a risk for Southgate to take him out of his usual role.
England started with Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice in defensive midfield last night, and the pair would surely ask questions if the Liverpool full-back was being picked ahead of them in their natural position.
Alexander-Arnold looks likely to start for England in their next match in November, as James could face a suspension after being red carded at full-time yesterday.
