Alan Shearer has said on Match of the Day on BBC One (11:01pm, September 25, 2021) that the goal that Aston Villa scored against Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday was rightly allowed.
What’s the story?
Villa got the better of United 1-0 away from home at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
Kortney Hause scored the only goal of the match in the 88th minute with a powerful header.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt that Villa’s goal should not have stood because of offside.
Solskjaer said that United goalkeeper David de Gea was impeded by Villa striker Ollie Watkins.
Alan Shearer’s verdict
Newcastle United legend and BBC Match of the pundit Shearer believes that the goal was rightly given.
The pundit has said that Wilfred Ndidi’s ‘goal’ for Leicester City against Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend that was ruled out under similar circumstances should have stood as well.
Shearer said on Match of the Day on BBC One (11:01pm, September 25, 2021): “Well, I don’t think it should be called offside, but there’s an argument certainly from Leicester after what happened last week.
“It’s a fantastic run from Kortney Hause, he gets his head on there and Ollie Watkins when he heads it, he is in front of him, he is in his line of sight, but there’s no way he is stopping it. There’s no way he is stopping it.”
The pundit added: “What I am saying is neither goal should be offside. Both goals should have been given.”
Late drama
There was even more late drama in the match at Old Trafford.
United were awarded a penalty deep in injury time, and Bruno Fernandes decided to take it.
This despite Cristiano Ronaldo still being on the pitch.
Fernandes could not keep his spot kick on target, handing Villa a 1-0 win.
