Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan has told Sky Sports News (18/11, 17:14) what Rangers informed Giovanni van Bronckhorst about the club’s January transfer budget.

The Gers have hired Van Bronckhorst as their new manager to replace Steven Gerrard at Ibrox. Ross Wilson moved fast to appoint the Dutchman, with the role filled in six-days.

Wilson had tracked Van Bronckhorst for a period of time to ready Rangers in case Gerrard left. And has brought the 46-year-old back to Glasgow, 20-years after leaving as a player.

Van der Kraan understands Rangers told Van Bronckhorst in their talks to replace Gerrard that he will have to work with a limited budget in the upcoming January transfer window.

The former Ibrox hero will likely only be able to strengthen over the winter if current Gers stars leave. But that is not what Van Bronckhorst wants in his first months as Rangers boss.

“He’s been told over the last few days that there are limitations at Rangers,” Van der Kraan said. “He’s aware of them. He knows that when he started at Feyenoord there was no money, and only if players go [will he be able to strengthen].

“That’s not what he wants, he’d like to keep the squad together. Only if players go, maybe he can replace them. But from what I understand, he’s aware of the budget. Not very big.”

Van Bronckhorst overlooks transfer budget concerns for Rangers return

Van Bronckhorst has seemingly overlooked potential budget concerns to secure his return to Rangers as their new manager after Gerrard.

The Daily Record reported prior to his arrival that Van Bronckhorst would only take the job if ‘everything’ was right. That included having financial backing to strengthen the squad.

But the Gers have financial issues that will hinder what the Dutchman can do in the January window. With the Daily Mail also noting Rangers want Van Bronckhorst to cut the wage bill, after it rose by 80% during Gerrard’s tenure to £48m-a-year while posting £23.5m in losses.
