Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing some of Tottenham’s plans during the World Cup break.

It may feel as though the World Cup is flying by, but there’s still more than three weeks to go until domestic football returns, and Premier League teams are having to keep themselves occupied.

We’ve seen plenty of training pictures, and some sides have even announced that they’re going to be playing friendlies.

One team we haven’t had much communication from is Tottenham Hotspur, but according to Gold, the north London club are likely to play no fewer than three behind-closed-doors friendlies during this time.

Gold discussed these plans, and he noted that this could be a great chance for Djed Spence to prove that he should be the club’s first-choice wing-back going forwards.

Spurs to play three friendlies

Gold shared what he knows about Spurs’ plans.

“It’s a period where certain players just have to load up with the Conte philosophy, get everything he wants into their system, into their memory bank, do everything he says. We’re likely to have three behind closed doors friendlies as well we think, so every minute of those games, Djed Spence has to show why he should be the right-wing-back,” Gold said.

Chance to impress

Gold notes that this is a chance for Spence to impress, but it’s not just the former Middlesbrough man who should be seizing this opportunity.

With a number of Spurs players away on World Cup duty, this is a chance for the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Clement Lenglet, Lucas Moura and Ryan Sessegnon to also stake a starting claim at Spurs.

Of course, whether or not these players take this opportunity remains to be seen, but this is a chance for some fringe players to showcase what they can do.
