Ian Wright has spoken about Newcastle United fans descending upon Trafalgar Square in London ‘like Vikings’ ahead of their EFL Cup final showdown against Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday, as he told Premier League Productions (27/02/23 at 7:35 pm).
Only around 30,000 Newcastle United supporters will be present inside Wembley for the club’s biggest game in decades, but be rest assured that thousands are in the capital for this occasion.
Photos and footage are being shared across social media of the Toon Army faithful’s ‘takeover’ of London, and in particular, of Trafalgar Square.
Given that this is the first time since the turn of the century that the Magpies have reached a showpiece final, then it was always going to be the bigger event for those in black and white.
Eddie Howe’s side, who have been outstanding since the Englishman took charge last season, have the chance to end five decades of hurt and win that first trophy that has awaited the club.
With many fans believing that this is their time, Arsenal legend Ian Wright is certainly hoping they make their dreams come true.
“They are brilliant,” said Wright. “I am getting the same (messages from fans) being in London. It’s like an invasion like Vikings have come. They are all in great form, that’s why you hope it spills into the final and they can get the result that they need.”

NEWCASTLE UNITED FANS TAKEOVER
It’s no surprise that Newcastle fans are in such a fine voice because they have a lot to cheer about.
But this could become the longest weekend of their lives if they can secure victory, however way possible, against Erik ten Hag’s in-form Manchester United.
This isn’t Manchester United of the last few years, where they are flattering to deceive, but one that is back on the charge and ready to go back to the top of English football, so this will be an almighty heavyweight clash.
