Tim Sherwood has claimed that Daniel Levy has done an ‘incredible’ job at Tottenham Hotspur, but stated how he can’t compete, from a financial aspect, with the likes of Newcastle United and Manchester City, as he told talkSPORT on Tuesday morning.
Whilst Manchester City have been around for a while now with their big wads of cash, Sherwood added that he can start to see Newcastle ‘throwing’ money at Eddie Howe in the future and he hopes it makes them ‘very successful’.
Throughout Levy’s reign in the Tottenham boardroom, he has run a tight ship, with some fans complaining that he doesn’t push the boat out enough.
Well, that was prominent when Mauricio Pochettino was at Hotspur Way, including not bringing in any players for two transfer windows on the bounce, despite a run to the Champions League final in Madrid.
At the time, Spurs were moving into a new stadium – which is now considered one of the best in the world – so, it meant they had to suffer in other departments, in the end, Pochettino headed for the exit door.
But, fast forward to the present, and Antonio Conte was backed during the recently-concluded summer transfer window, as Sherwood praised Levy for the job he has done in north London.
“I was at the football club with the old regime, with Alan Sugar,” said Sherwood. “I liked Alan. I thought he was a really straight-talking guy, and obviously, we have seen a lot of him.
“Where Daniel has taken that football club is chalk and cheese. It’s an incredible job what he has done there. The fans will say, ‘well, we haven’t won anything and that surely has got to be the most important thing’.
“Yes, it’s important for the fans. I understand that. It’s important for the manager, Antonio Conte, and certainly the players. Levy hasn’t backed his managers like a Man City, but how can he?! Or some other clubs, like Newcastle possibly in the future. They might start throwing it at Eddie Howe and, hopefully, he becomes very successful.
“I think it’s a difficult job to be a chairman when the passion is there with the fans. The support of Tottenham is incredible, but they demand success and they need it quickly. They need some sort of success. I think he has put all his cards on the table with Antonio Conte.”
TOTTENHAM TO PUSH AGAIN?
When everyone is fit, Conte seems pretty happy with the XI he can put out to compete, both in the Champions League and in the Premier League.
But, over the course of the season, when rotating, dealing with suspensions or dealing with injuries, then that depth is needed.
That’s where Conte seems a little uneasy and he has hinted, time and time again, that more quality needs to be brought in during the forthcoming transfer windows.
Well, whilst Levy didn’t push the boat out for Pochettino, he surely has to do that for the trophy-laden coach who is in his dugout now.
