Speaking on Liverpool’s official YouTube channel, Fabio Carvalho has been providing some alternative commentary on Liverpool’s game vs Newcastle earlier this season.
The Reds beat the Magpies 2-1 earlier this year, and now, Carvalho has been tasked with adding some of his commentary to this blockbuster of a match.
When reviewing the game, one player caught the eye of Carvalho – Harvey Elliott.
Indeed, during a phase of play where Elliott dribbled past two Newcastle players before playing a through ball, Carvalho said that his former Fulham teammate reminded him of a young Lionel Messi.

Messi-esque
Carvalho reacted to the footage of Elliott against Newcastle.
“We’ve got a chance here, it’s Harvey on the ball, he gets past one, he gets past another. It’s like a young Leo Messi. Where is he going? That wasn’t bad at all. I remember watching you play and you balled out in this game, so fair dues,” Carvalho said.
Young Messi
While Elliott doesn’t quite have the same goalscoring capabilities of Lione Messi, there’s an element of his playstyle that is reminiscent of the Argentine’s.
A diminuitive, left-footer who loves to dribble, Elliott can sometimes look like Messi on the pitch – albeit to a less effect.
Of course, at the age of just 19, Elliott has plenty of room to grow and become closer to the ability level we’ve seen from Messi for the past 15 years.
If Elliott can become even half as good as Messi has been then Liverpool will have an absolute superstar on their hands.
As things stand, Elliott is a promising young talent and he could go on to become a true great for the Reds in years to come.
