Divock Origi has been released by Liverpool.

The Belgium international’s release under Fenway Sports Group was confirmed a little earlier this month and now Origi looks set for an adventure with AC Milan in Italy.

The 27-year-old wasn’t the best striker Liverpool ever signed but, as Reds supporters and Jurgen Klopp will confirm, the former Lille hitman scored some massive goals since joining in 2014.

In 2019, Origi scored two of their four goals as Klopp’s side beat Barcelona 4-0 to reach the final of the Champions League, before scoring again in the showpiece against Tottenham Hotspur.

There’s been several major goals that the towering marksman has also managed in the Premier League.

And Belgium goalkeepeing coach Jean-Francois Gillet has adequately summed up the player in an interview with Italian media this morning.

He told Gazzetta: “When I met him he was 17 and he was always on his own, but we got along right away. A serious, intelligent, hard-working boy, and on the pitch he is like a hawk. He is capable of not touching the ball for eighty minutes, only to hurt you in the last five.”

That last sentence sums up Origi to a tee.

And that’s why Liverpool boss Klopp had such an affection for the big man, for his capacity to change the course of a game virtually out of nowhere.

Okay he didn’t always work as a super sub, but Divock Origi often did bag a game-changing goal for the Anfield outfit and for that reason, he will be fondly remembered on the red half of the Merseyside divide.
