Simon Mignolet has been speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws about life at Club Brugge, following his departure from Liverpool in 2019.

What’s the story?

Well, the £6m man sat down alongside his wife Jasmien to discuss what life has been like since Jürgen Klopp sold him in 2019.

Shortly after the Champions League final in Kiev, the 34-year-old returned to Belgium, having been pushed even further down the pecking order following the arrival of Alisson Becker.

Mignolet admits he took a “risk” in leaving when he did, although according to Jasmien Mignolet, things are now “like a dream” in Bruges.

The Belgium international said: “I took a very big risk at the time. I could have taken out my contract at Liverpool, which would have given me many more options as a free agent. Or I could have opted for an intermediate step first.”

Then, Jasmien added: “I wasn’t even here when he qualified Club Brugge for the Champions League. Now, it’s running like a dream.”

So far this season, Mignolet – who Gary Neville felt had to leave Liverpool – has made 48 appearances in all competitions, keeping 17 clean sheets while conceding 63 goals.

Interestingly, one staff member at Anfield thinks Mignolet was treated harshly during his time in the Premier League.

Liverpool were ruthless with Simon Mignolet

During the early days of the Klopp era, Liverpool had many goalkeeping issues as both Mignolet and Loris Karius floundered.

As he did with the likes of Christian Benteke too, the German wasted no time in acting ruthlessly, bringing a world-class goalkeeper to Anfield after Karius made two errors in the 2019 Champions League final.

In many ways, that is one of the most interesting aspects of Klopp’s management style.

The 54-year-old has been able to act ruthlessly to improve his squad, although he has never really fallen out with anyone in a messy, public manner.

It just goes to show that even those Klopp discards have a lot of respect for him, and now look at Liverpool – their transformation has been a phenomenal one under the German tactician.
