Recent rumours linking Douglas Luiz with a move to Chelsea have been cast into doubt following Liam Rosenior’s latest comments.
Chelsea’s need for a midfielder increased after Dario Essugo suffered an injury setback, and with Romeo Lavia still out without a clear return date, options are limited.
Liam Rosenior has generally used a midfield two or three this season, adjusting based on who’s available. Enzo Fernandez has often stepped into a more advanced role during Cole Palmer’s absence.

Liam Rosenior was asked about the potential signing of a central midfielder at his pre-match press conference ahead of Crystal Palace.
He responded by saying this (as per Football.London):
“Unfortunately, Dario picked up a really unfortunate injury. He slipped in training and will be out for over a month. Romeo is on the way back, which is great. He’s a very, very good player at a very high level.
“We have Enzo, Moi, Andrey Santos and Reece James – it’s not bad. I don’t want to bring in players that don’t enhance the group or the chemistry we’re building.”
How Douglas Luiz stacks up against Chelsea’s midfield options
Douglas Luiz is open to the idea of joining Chelsea.
He’s a smart player who has already shown he can handle the Premier League, though it’s been a while since we’ve seen him at his best like during his time at Aston Villa.
His flexibility could be an asset, as he can slot into either an eight or six role. But he’s not in top form right now and looks a bit behind other Chelsea midfielders defensively, especially when you look at ball recoveries.
Chelsea have some good defensive options in their midfield already, so if Luiz does come in, it might just be as cover for someone else.
