Aston Villa dropped more points in their promotion push following their home draw against Hull City.
Sky Sports pundit Liam Rosenior has admitted that he is surprised at Aston Villa’s defensive problems considering they have John Terry on their coaching staff.
The former Premier League player warned Dean Smith’s side that they ‘cannot be conceding two goals’ every time they play at home if they have aspirations of climbing up the table.
Villa dropped further points at home on Saturday afternoon when they had to come from 2-0 down to record a 2-2 draw against Hull City.
Rosenior was asked by presenter David Prutton whether it is ‘surprising’ that only two teams have conceded more goals than Villa this season considering who they have on their coaching staff
“Yes, obviously everyone is going to say about John Terry being there,” Rosenior told EFL Championship Goals on Sky Sports on 19/01/2019 at 8:40 pm. “But the players on the pitch are the most important.
“This has been a key feature for them before Dean Smith got the job. I thought he would correct that. They brought Elphick back from Hull, who you thought would make a difference. But they seem to be conceding more goals, at the moment.
“If you want to climb the table you cannot be conceding two goals at home.”
Last season, during their run to the playoff final under Steve Bruce, Villa shipped only 42 goals, they were behind on that list only to the Championship’s top two, Wolves and Cardiff.
However, under Bruce and now Smith, it has been a different story during this campaign as they have already conceded 45 goals from their 28 league matches.
As a result, Villa are seven points outside of the promotion picture as it is looking likely week by week that they could miss out on a top-six finish if results continue the way they are.
Former manager Paul Lambert visits Villa Park next Saturday, with his Ipswich Town side bottom of the Championship table and seven points from safety.
