Liam Lindsay would be the perfect fourth-choice centre-back for Leeds with U23 backup not yet ready

Leeds United have been linked with a move for the young defender.

According to a recent report from the Daily Record, Leeds United are interested in signing Partick Thistle centre-back Liam Lindsay, and the move would make perfect sense given the lack of quality back-up at Elland Road when you look past the first-team.

Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson are the undisputed first-choice central pairing and Leeds will be hoping to tie both to permanent deals sooner rather than later. Then comes Liam Cooper, who is a more than able deputy with experience to boot.

But what next?

Luke Ayling can operate as a centre-back however he is excelling on the right this season, and then there is the next generation – players like 18-year-old Jack Vann and 20-year-old Paul McKay.

Both are highly rated yet their experience of senior football is either limited or non-existent and neither will be ready for the step up if Leeds earn promotion come May.

In contrast, Lindsay is a 21-year-old with 55 first-team appearances for Partick under his belt, as well as 11 for Alloa Athletic and six for Airdrie.

In short he knows what it takes to succeed in top flight football, having faced the likes of Celtic and Rangers, and while the Premier League is another proposition entirely he would represent a sensible fourth-choice option for Leeds.

In time McKay and Vann could make it, with the latter particularly impressive, but Leeds boss Garry Monk needs to think in the here and now, and a move for Lindsay ticks all the boxes.
