Has Alex McLeish just exposed a transfer error made by Rangers last summer? Probably.
McLeish has called former Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly into his Scotland squad for the upcoming international break.
Gers boss Steven Gerrard sold the 23-year-old to Livingston last summer [BBC Sport] and with Kelly dazzling in the Scottish Premiership, it certainly seemed a mistake.
But his call-up to the international team reinforces the theory that Gerrard indeed should’ve kept him.
Would Kelly play for Rangers this season? In a word, no.
Allan McGregor has been one of the light Blues’ best players, to the point where Wes Foderingham has barely had a sniff.
But McGregor is also 37 years old and is in the twilight of his career. As a 23-year-old keeper, Kelly has a very promising one ahead of him and perhaps a loan might’ve been the better option by Gerrard last year.
Long term, Kelly could’ve been the goalkeeper that the Ibrox outfit will need within a year or two when McGregor calls it a day, and McLeish’s decision to promote him backs that up.
