When Celtic lost Liam Hughes to Liverpool on deadline day, the news barely registered on the radar.

The Bhoys were busy tying up a deal for Jonjoe Kenny, adding the Everton right back on loan for the rest of the season.

Over at Anfield, Liverpool were focusing on defensive additions as Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak arrived from Preston and Schalke respectively.

Hughes signed too, with the young goalkeeper arriving from Celtic to join Liverpool’s Under-23 setup.

This left some fans baffled; Liverpool already had the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher, Marcelo Pitaluga, Kamil Grabara, Jakub Ojrzynski and Vitezslav Jaros at the club.

Another young stopper didn’t seem like a priority, but Hughes took a major step on Sunday night.

Less than a month after leaving Celtic, Hughes was named on the bench for a Premier League game, travelling with the Liverpool squad to take on Sheffield United.

The 19-year-old had only made one appearance in Premier League 2, but the 6ft 3in stopper seemingly did enough to impress Jurgen Klopp and co.

With Alisson and Kelleher both out last night, Hughes joined Ojrzynski on the Liverpool bench, marking a major milestone in his career.

The Northern Irish talent will be seeking more opportunities in the future, and will hope that his decision to leave Celtic pays off.
