Manchester United entered the summer transfer window hoping Liam Delap would be one of their first arrivals.

Matheus Cunha was confirmed on the very first day of the window, but the immediate focus shifted to finding a new striker. Delap, with his £30m release clause triggered by Ipswich Town’s relegation, soon became a top target.

Plenty of other clubs were aware of his clause, though, and Delap surprised many by choosing Chelsea, reuniting with former manager Enzo Maresca. Now, all the interested parties – including the Red Devils – know what was behind this decision.

Speaking to The Athletic, the former Manchester City striker has explained his motivations to join Chelsea instead of other clubs.

“It was a nice position to be in, but also there are a lot of decisions you have to make. You never know if it is going to be the right decision. You’ve just got to go with your gut and hopefully it works out,” Delap said.

“There are so many factors that go into it. I’ve got a good relationship with the manager. I know how he plays. I’ve played in this system before. I know a lot of the players here and the project of the club, how they see the future. That’s what excited me.”

His words about “how they see the future” should worry Ineos, as it shows that Delap made a clear decision based on the broader vision and belief in what Chelsea was building – something United couldn’t convince him of.

Man United must move past Delap and act quickly

Amorim has already made it clear he wants new arrivals secured before the pre-season tour of the United States, so time is tight.

United are expected to come back with another bid for Gyokeres, who has made it clear he’d prefer a move to Arsenal despite his beef with Sporting. Hugo Ekitike is another option, though Eintracht Frankfurt appear determined to stick to their £85m asking price.

It’s a difficult market, and missing out on Delap means United may have to move quickly – and perhaps more aggressively – to avoid coming up empty-handed again.
