Leeds United narrowly missed out on promotion last season.

Liam Cooper has told LUTV that he was “very down” after the way in which Leeds United finished last season, but believes that Thomas Christiansen can reinvigorate the Whites as they plot another Premier League promotion bid.

Under Garry Monk, Leeds could and definitely should have been competing in the playoffs after the regular season finished, but a horrendous run of one victory in their last eight games scuppered their hopes of returning to the top flight for the first time in 13 years.

United, who finished five points adrift of the top six in the end, named Christiansen as head coach a couple of weeks ago following Monk’s shock resignation back in May.

Although Cooper says that he – and his other-half – was gutted at how the 2016-17 campaign ended, the Leeds ace claims he and his team-mates are ready to embark on another “big journey” toward the promised land under the Dane next time around.

“Obviously the lads and myself were very down for a couple of weeks. I think if you asked my missus she would tell you the same,” the 25-year-old centre-back told LUTV.

“But it is what it is, we have proved we belong up there fighting for promotion and let’s hopefully go on another big journey this year and get ourselves where we are meant to be. We have proved as a team and as a young team last year that we are more than capable of competing at the top of the league.

“Obviously the new manager is going to come in with his own ideas and hopefully that can get us over the line come the end of the season.”

Leeds will certainly be aiming to at least reach the playoffs next term, after signing three players since Christiansen’s arrival – Mateusz Klich, Madger Gomes and Felix Wiedwald – and a number of others could be done this week.
