Liam Cooper has expressed his delight at the news that Marcelo Bielsa will remain as Leeds United boss next season.

Liam Cooper has told Leeds’ official website that he is delighted to see Marcelo Bielsa decide to stay at Elland Road for another year, as he suggested that the Whites have continuity for the first time since he joined back in 2014.

Despite such a disappointing end to the season, plenty of Leeds supporters are now feeling positive heading into next season after it was confirmed that Bielsa will be staying for a second campaign.

He is set to become the first manager to oversee two pre-seasons in a row with the club since Simon Grayson, who left more than seven years ago. And Cooper – who is working under his ninth manager at Elland Road, and has also seen the departures of both GFH and Massimo Cellino – expressed his delight at the club not having to build new foundations once again.

“It is great to see the club exercise the option for Marcelo to stay with us next year. Along with Andrea, Victor and Angus he is helping to create a new culture at Leeds and it’s a really exciting time to be involved as a player,” he told the club’s official website.

“It has been a bitterly disappointing end to the campaign for everyone at the club, but this news allows us to focus on the next year – we have continuity for the first time in my career at Leeds and we will all now be focused on returning to pre-season and working hard to achieve our ultimate goal together.”

There is a very long time to go before the new Championship season begins. But Leeds supporters would be forgiven for feeling that the club have done one of the best pieces of business that they could possibly do by keeping hold of Bielsa.

Bielsa took a squad that had finished in mid-table the previous year and turned them into a team that should have got across the line in the promotion race following an outstanding campaign.

And Leeds fans may now feel that with a little more luck with injuries and some better business in the transfer market, Bielsa could be left with the tools he needs to clear that final hurdle next time around.
