Glasgow Rangers midfielder Liam Burt arguably needs a loan move this season after signing a new deal at Ibrox.
When Rangers’ first-team got their first glimpse of Liam Burt back in 2016, the Ibrox faithful would have been forgiven for feeling seriously excited about what the then 17-year-old’s future could look like.
Unfortunately for Burt, his Gers career has not exactly taken off since. He has not added to his three league appearances for the Light Blues since Mark Warburton’s departure, and injury has seemingly caused his development to stagnate slightly over the last couple of years.
He got the chance to prove himself out on loan during the latter stages of last season as he joined Dumbarton for a couple of months, and the Gers have rewarded the youngster by handing him a new one-year contract – as reported by the club’s official academy Twitter account.
Burt being handed a one-year extension just hints that the Gers are not entirely sure about whether he will go on to realise his full potential, and with Steven Gerrard’s side well stocked when it comes to options in the middle of the park, it may not be a massive surprise if his wait for a first-team return goes a little longer.
So perhaps Burt now needs to look at the duration of the deal as a challenge and ask about another loan move away from Ibrox for the coming season. The 19-year-old surely needs regular game-time to stand the best chance of proving that he deserves another new deal in the near future.
He can show to Gerrard that he can handle playing regular football at senior level, which is probably what the Englishman needs to see at this stage given that he has so many midfielders available to him right now. Burt needs to do his best to stand out, and heading away for a few months or the full season could give him that opportunity.
